Your Swing Wedding Planner
Location, location, location....
Where will we dance? Will the band fit? These questions will guide your search for the perfect ballroom, dance or reception hall.
When planning a Swing Wedding, the thing you must consider first is the location.
During my search I found that everyone said they had a dance floor, including the restaurant with 12 sq.ft. of tiled space to accommodate the band and dancers and the mansion with the tented patio with rubberized tile and a water hazard. Ask for the dimensions of the floor, the approximate number of people it can hold (keeping in mind they are not thinking about swing dancers) and the size of the stage area (width,
length, and height). Not sure how much space you need? Show up to your favorite club a little early, and bring a tape measure.
Several places we visited had tiled dance floors or wooden sectionals. Make it a priority to find a good surface. You don't want an aerial to end in an injury -- or your wedding cake. As you may know, locations with wood floors will be your best bet. They offer a solid surface without seams that should be less slippery than tile. They also allow you flexible dance space -- just move a table and presto! more room to dance.
Your stage requirements will vary with your band. A seventeen piece Big Band will require more room than a Jump-Blues combo. When booking the band ask about their needs. Some bands will specify the dimensions of their stage, needed sound equipment, food and drink. Most bands will send you a "rider" that lists all their needs. Don't worry about the crazy stuff they ask for, like a case of Scotch or setting up a t-shirt stand. Everything is negotiable. Regardless of who you book first make sure you know what the band wants and what the hall can accommodate.
Oh, and don't forget to make sure that you like the place.
